The bauma Innovation Award 2016 was awarded for the “reinforcement of a steel bridge with orthotropic road surfacing by means of high-strength concrete“. At a bridge in Beimerstetten, LEONHARD WEISS realised a method to renovate dilapidated steel bridges in Germany in the future, in cooperation with the Regional Commission Karlsruhe, as well as the companies Contec International and Bolidt. The use of high-strength concrete allows an innovative and especially efficient procedure, which was put into practice for the first time in Germany during this model project. The result convinced the jury: the method is a “sustainable and economic development with great practical benefit and a contribution to energy and resource efficiency“.
“Thanks to this innovative and creative engineering performance the usability of existing buildings is prolonged sustainably“. This was the reasoning for example, of the jury for the German Viaduct Construction Award (Deutscher Brückenbaupreis) 2016, which was awarded to the engineering office Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner for the planning, as well as the engineers of LEONHARD WEISS for the execution. The large-scale project “Retrofitting of the Kochertal Viaduct“ on the Autobahn A6 near Geislingen proves, that and in which manner German engineering from the 1970-ies can be further developed in an innovative way. The construction engineers developed unused potentials of the viaduct structure in detailed analyses. By doing this, the load bearing capacity of the existing structure could be improved by means of comparably minor interventions to exceed its original state. Germany’s highest viaduct is much stronger than before this measures were taken and it is now fit for the congestion of the future.

The quality award is granted every year for projects, which considerably differ from comparable performances due to their quality and significance and for ex. improve working processes in railway construction in a sustainable manner.
